SIALKOT (By Abid Mehdi) In Sialkot, the Nawaz Sharif Hockey Stadium has been lying victim of height of alleged official apathy and negligence, due to which this stadium was not coming to the purposes for which this stadium had been established.

The then Punjab government had established this hockey stadium, named after the former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, for promoting the hockey six years ago under the supervision of the Sialkot District Sports Board and Pakistan Hockey Federation as well.

This hockey stadium was now in dire need of urgent government attention, besides, seeking a proper mechanism for its proper look after.

The then Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif had inaugurated this stadium on March 06, 2013 (six years ago) here.

The lawns of this stadium were lying filled with self-grown reeds, grass and sewerage water, due to which the ill smell, was oozing out and spreading in the area.

Local officials told that the stadium’s ground was lying badly damaged and Astroturf has become torn at various spots in this ground.

The Astroturf was also damaged at various spots in this hockey ground.

This grass and self-grown reeds have not yet been got trimmed by the hockey stadium management, which was eclipsing the beauty of this hockey stadium. The hockey stadium’s surroundings and football ground filled with the reeds and several feet high grass have become a safer place for the dangerous and harmful insects including the snakes as well, besides, posing serious threats of spread of the dengue larvas there.

The ladders-cum-seats, meant for the spectators in this hockey stadium, were also presenting a very miserable and ugly condition, besides, showing the alleged height of negligence by the concerned officials, in this regard.

There was no proper drainage system in and around this hockey stadium due to which the hockey ground, adjacent football ground and their surrounding parts remained inundated due to recent flash floods and heavy rains in Sialkot.

Later, the stagnant rainy water was evaporated while badly affecting the football ground, hockey ground, Astroturf and spectators’ enclosures there.

No one had ever paid any attention towards this nasty condition due to which the situation was getting worst day by day there.

Sialkot was globally known for producing the world class sports goods and international-famed hockey players including Shehnaz Sheikh, Muhammad Asif Bajwa and Nasir Ali.

The local officials added that there was no hockey promotion activity held at this hockey stadium for the last several years.

On the other hand, Sialkot Deputy Commissioner Dr. Syed Bilal Haider has directed the concerned officials of the Sialkot District Sports Board and Sialkot Municipal Corporation to ensure the early implementation on the effective measures to save this hockey stadium and its Astroturf from for further destruction and ensuring the regular holding the hockey matches at this Nawaz Sharif Hockey Stadium.
