At least 19 killed, over 50 injured as trains collided near Rahimyar Khan

RAHIM YAR KHAN (ENNS) At least 9 passengers including woman and children were killed and over 50 injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train near Sadiqabad, Rahim Yar Khan district on Thursday morning in Punjab province.

According to details, Akbar Express travelling from Quetta to Lahore collided with a stationary freight train at the Walhar Railway Station in Sadiqabad Tehsil.

The freight train was standing on the loop line when the passenger train instead of running on the mainline went on the wrong track.
According to rescue sources the injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals of Sadiqabad and Rahim Yar Khan for treatment where an emergency was declared.

The rescue sources say they fear more casualties in the accident

Barrister Murtaza Wahab, advisor to CM Sindh on Information while extending his grief on the loss of lives said incompetent PTI government has destroyed every department and institution in the country.

At least 19 passengers were killed while 72 others were
injured when a passenger train, the Akbar Express, collided with a
freight train Parcel Express at the Walhar Railway Station some 53 kms
from here at 4.45 am on Thursday morning.According to Rescue sources
19 passengers while some independent sources 20 people were died and
75 injured in the accident.The accident occurred when Quetta bound
Akbar Express collided with Parcel Express halted at a loop line.Rail
traffic suspended on both up and down tracks for many hours.Six
coaches of Akbar Express demaged in the accident.After the accident
district administration imposed the emergency in the district.Rescue
1122,police,civil defense teams from four tehsils reached the scene
and Railway rescue teams from Sukkur with heavy machinery reached the
spot to remove passengers who were stuck in the train.Later Pakistan
Army teams were also called there with helicopter for rescue
operations.According to Rescue 1122 spokesperson Adnan Shabir 50
ambulances from various areas in the district reached the site of the
incident in order to shift the injured to THQ Sadiqabad and Sheikh
Zayed Medical College Hospital Rahim Yar Khan.He said that 60 injured
were shifted to THQ hospital Sadiqabad with 9 bodies.
DPO Umar Farooq Salamat said that it looked like when the signal
changed on the track, the passenger train went on to the loop line
where a freight train was parked resulting in the accident.District
administration appealed the citizens to reach hospitals for blood
donations.A body brough at SZMCH was identified Yasir son of Muhammad
Aslam Faisalabad. Some sources in Pakistan Railway told this
correspondent that there is a computerized system of crossing (track
changing lever) at mostly railway stations but at Walhar railway
station it was manual crossing system. First of all Assistant Station
Master releases permission to cabin man for crossing through a light
alert and then cabin man changes the crossing. There was something
wrong between ASM and cabin man due to which the accident
occurred.
