KARACHI (ENNS) Dr. Shahida Rehmani, MNA, President Women’s Wing Pakistan People’s Party Karachi and a member of the Senate of University of Karachi has condemned the encroachment by the federal Higher Education Commission (HEC) in the affairs of curricular designing and other higher education matters which, come under purview of the provincial governments after 18th Amendment in the Constitution.
While talking to a delegation of Joint Action Committee of the universities led by Prof. Dr. S. M. Talha at her office, Dr. Rehmani, assured the delegation to raise the issue of closing of 2 year Bachelor programme and introduction of a 4 year degree programmes in the colleges and universities under the provincial government.
The delegation members included Prof. Zafar Yar Khan, Dr. Riaz Ahmed, Prof. Dr. Mansoor Ahmed Razzaqi, Dr. Asghar Dashti, social activists Naghma Shaikh and Waheed Baloch. They informed the MNA that teachers associations of colleges and universities in Sindh have already rejected the four year Associated and Degree programmes and demanded restoration of two year Bachelor’s degrees.
During the meeting Dr. Rehmani said that introduction of the new degree programme of four-year degree programme was made without any consultation with representatives of teachers, parents, students and other stakeholders including the provincial government.
She said the colleges and universities teachers have brought to her knowledge that this decision would badly affect the students coming from poor background. She said she would also take up this issue with the Chief Minister of Sindh to raise it in the Council of Common Interests (CCI). She supported the protest rally by the Action Committee on 24th December from Aga Khan Hospital to office of Higher Education Commission in Karachi.
She urged the law minister of Sindh to implement the law passed by Sindh Assembly for setting up of Sindh Higher Education Commission as after 18th Amendment universities’ education is a provincial subject.
